Fairmont Kea Lani to Host Community Celebration Honoring Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea

A Day of Cultural Education and Restoration – Sunday, July 27, 2025

Wailea, Maui – In recognition of Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea, Hawaiʻi’s Day of Sovereignty Restoration, Fairmont Kea Lani invites the community to a day of cultural learning, reflection, and celebration on Sunday, July 27, 2025, from 9:45 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea commemorates the restoration of Hawaiian sovereignty in 1843 and stands as a profound reminder of the resilience, dignity, and enduring pride of the Hawaiian people. Held in collaboration with esteemed cultural practitioners from across the islands, the celebration will take place in the resort’s main lobby and at Hale Kukuna, Fairmont Kea Lani’s Hawaiian cultural center.

The celebration begins at 9:45 a.m. with a traditional flag-raising ceremony and the singing of Hawai‘i Ponoʻī, inviting all to stand together in unity and reverence. Guests are then welcome to explore a series of rotating educational sessions that honor and perpetuate traditional Hawaiian arts and practices. Highlights include lauhala weaving with Gayle “Kaila” Miyaguchi, kapa making with Lei Ishikawa, and traditional woodworking with Kenneth Hiraoka. Throughout the day, attendees can also observe the delicate craft of featherwork with Leonani Meyer, witness the ancestral art of kākau uhi (traditional tattooing) with Chase Keliʻipaʻakaua, and learn about indigenous agricultural practices with Lukela Alboro. Live music by Kaniala Masoe will provide a joyful and uplifting soundtrack for the day’s events.
