CELEBRATE EARTH DAY AT THE RITZ-CARLTON, KAPALUA

Luxury Maui Resort Goes Green(er) with New On-Property Garden, Plastic Straw Ban, Reef-Safe Sunscreen, and Ambassadors of the Environment Program

KAPALUA, MAUI, HI – April 19, 2018 – The newly renovated and eco-friendly Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua resort invites guest and locals alike to partake in various Earth Day initiatives and activities taking place on Sunday, April 22, 2018 and beyond. Recognized as a Hawaii Certified Green business – one that strives to operate in an environmentally and socially responsible manner – The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua will be expanding their already impressive sustainable measures with the addition of new environmentally-friendly practices.

Taking place on Earth Day, volunteers are encouraged to join as the resort revamps their on-property organic garden, replanting it with a variety of herbs, fruits, and vegetables, including an abundant of basil varieties, as well as diverse mint plants, including pineapple, orange and ginger mint, all grown overlooking the Pacific Ocean and island of Molokai. The garden compost will be derived from hotel kitchen waste, the primary source of sustainable green energy utilized to grow healthy herbs and vegetables. The entire garden will be scientifically directed to ensure a maximum organic blend of nutrients present in the produce for the valued resort guests. The garden also serves as a learning center, promoting various methods of sustainable horticulture to guests, schools, and the public.

The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua is proud to be one of only four Ritz-Carlton properties worldwide to have an exclusive partnership with Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ocean Future Society to provide a dedicated “Ambassadors of the Environment” program for its guests. With a range of environmental activities designed for participants of all ages, trained naturalists can guide guests through everything from rainforest hikes and snorkeling to whale watching. Additionally, The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua takes great strides to protect and maintain the surrounding coral reef by providing reef-safe sunscreen for its guests.

The Burger Shack, the resort’s casual beachfront café offering picturesque eats with the views to match, is proud to be recognized as an Ocean Friendly Certified Restaurant. Created by the Surfrider Foundation, the Ocean Friendly Restaurants program was created to recognize those making a conscious effort to keep our oceans clean by reducing plastic waste and eliminating the use of expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam.

Nestled within the 22,000-acre Kapalua Resort, The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua proudly maintains the Honokahua Preservation Site – a recognized “wahi pana” (sacred site) that lies adjacent to the resort and serves as a destination where Native Hawaiians can gather to conduct ceremonial rituals and honor their ancestors. Since the hotel’s opening 25 years ago, the resort has been dedicated to maintaining a strong relationship with the local community as well as remaining stewards of the natural environment in which it resides.
